How to Budget for Video Production in London (2026), With A Free Cost Calculator
TLDR - Use our free production calculator to get a rough cost in 30 seconds or less
A London video production budget is seven decisions: shoot days, production type, crew size, deliverables, talent, usage rights and add-ons. Five of them can be made before you speak to anyone.
Single commercial shoot days with LutherMEB Productions start at £3,500 with post-production included. Campaign production runs £8,000 to £20,000. Flagship production with named talent and broadcast delivery starts at £25,000.
Budgets get approved as a range and a tier, not a figure. The six-step sign-off process is below.
The free video production cost calculator runs on the same logic we quote from. Set the brief, read the range, copy the brief into your budget request.

- Your estimate
This is an estimate, not a quote. It is built on our published rates and the brief you have set. The written quote is more precise because it accounts for the things a slider cannot: permits, tight turnarounds, specialist kit, and exactly how far the film will travel.
Ask five London production companies how much a video costs and four will ask you to book a call. It is not evasion, mostly. A quote depends on things a buyer has not usually decided yet: how many days, who is on camera, where the film will run and for how long. The problem is that the buyer needs a number before they can decide any of that, because the number is what gets the project approved internally. So the industry runs on a loop where nobody can start until someone guesses.
Most production budgets in the UK are still built the same way they were twenty years ago: a line for each crew grade at a day rate, a line for kit, a line for pre-production, a percentage for post, then talent and usage on top. BECTU publishes recommended rates by grade, Equity sets the floor for performers, and every studio layers its own margin and overhead on that. What changes between a £3,500 film and a £35,000 one is not the method. It is how many of those lines are switched on and how large each one is.
This article walks through the lines, with real London hire costs where they are public, shows how to get the number approved once you have it, and puts a tool in your hands that does the maths.
What goes into a video production budget in London?
A London video production budget is decided by seven inputs: shoot days, production type, crew size, deliverables, talent, usage rights and add-ons. With LutherMEB Productions a single shoot day starts at £3,500, campaign production runs £8,000 to £20,000 and flagship production starts at £25,000; which tier you land in is set almost entirely by those seven.
Shoot days
Shoot days. The single biggest lever. A day is crew, kit, location and a producer's time, all at once. Two days is not twice one day, because pre-production happens once and day two adds about 60% of the first, but it is still the fastest way to add or remove thousands.
Production type
A social-first piece shot documentary style, a brand film with a treatment and a lit interview set-up, a campaign built for paid media with multiple scenes, or a TV commercial with agency sign-off and broadcast clearance. Each step up adds pre-production, planning time and a higher spec on set.
Crew size
Director-led with a small unit, or a compact crew with a dedicated director of photography, gaffer and sound recordist, or a flagship crew with a first AC, art department and a producer on the floor.
Deliverables
One hero film and three platform cutdowns is the normal starting set. More cutdowns cost less each, because the edit is already graded and the assets exist; the fourth is cheap, the tenth is cheaper.
Talent
Real people from your business cost nothing beyond their time. Street-cast or agency talent cost a day rate each. Named talent costs a fee and a usage deal, and that single decision can be the largest line on the quote.
Usage rights
Where the film runs, for how long, in which territories. Owned channels and organic social are the floor. UK paid social, UK broadcast and international use each carry separate fees for talent, voiceover and music.
Add-ons
Studio or location hire, a second camera operator, professional voiceover, shooting abroad, a premium sync licence. Each is a known number that either applies or does not.
If you can answer those seven, any competent production company can quote you in a day. Most buyers can answer five of them before they have spoken to anyone. That is what the calculator is for.
How does the video production cost calculator work?
The LutherMEB Productions video production cost calculator asks seven questions and returns a price range in about thirty seconds, built on the published 2026 rates we quote from: £3,500 for a single shoot day, 60% of that for each further day, and published additions for production type, crew, talent and usage. There is no email gate and nothing is sent unless you choose to send it.
When you reach the end, "Copy this brief" puts your answers and the range on your clipboard as plain text, so you can paste it into a budget request, an email to us, or a message to another production company for comparison. We built it that way on purpose. A buyer who arrives with a brief already written is a better client for everyone.
The two ends of the range reflect the normal spread between the cheapest and the most expensive honest way to deliver the same brief. A quote below the low end deserves a question; a quote above the high end deserves an explanation.
How do you get a video production budget approved?
A video production budget gets approved when it is presented as a range and a tier, tied to one sentence about what the film has to do, with a written quote behind it. The six steps below take a brief from first idea to signed-off number in about a week, and the calculator does the maths for you in step two.
Two things make the difference in practice.
The first is leading with the outcome. Finance does not approve "a brand film"; it approves "the launch asset for the spring range, cut for Meta and YouTube, running for twelve months". The budget is then a cost of that outcome, and it is compared with the media spend behind it rather than with the price of a camera.
The second is refusing to give a single number. A figure invites a haggle, and the haggle produces a budget the film cannot be made for. A range with a tier attached ("campaign production, £15,500 to £18,750") shows that the number has a floor and shows what the floor buys. Most of the budget conversations that go wrong go wrong at the moment someone said "£17,000" out loud.
-
Week one
Write down what the film has to do
One sentence, before any budget. "Launch the spring range to a cold paid audience" and "explain Management+ to existing clients" are different films at different prices. Finance approves outcomes, not footage.
-
Same day
Run the brief through the calculator
Seven questions, thirty seconds. You come out with a range and a tier: single shoot day from £3,500, campaign production £8,000 to £20,000, flagship from £25,000. Copy the brief. That text is your budget request.
-
Before you ask
Present a range and a tier, not a figure
"Campaign production, £15,500 to £18,750" survives a finance conversation. "£17,000" invites a haggle to £14,000 and a film that cannot be made for it. The range shows the number has a floor, and the tier shows what the floor buys.
-
In the room
Answer the three questions before they are asked
Why is day two cheaper than day one? Pre-production happens once. Why is usage a separate line? Because a performer's day rate buys their time, not the right to run their face in paid media. Why not a freelancer at half the price? Because half the price is usually one person and no sound recordist, and the film will show it.
-
Within 48 hours
Turn the estimate into a written quote
Send the copied brief to LutherMEB Productions. A written quote comes back within two working days, inside the range nine times in ten, and it says plainly if a cheaper tier would do the job. That document is what finance signs, not the estimate.
-
Approval
Lock the scope with the number
The budget that gets approved is for a specific brief: these days, this crew, these deliverables, this usage. Write that into the approval. Scope that grows after sign-off is where video projects go over, and it is almost never the production company's doing.
How much do talent and usage rights add to a video production?
Talent and usage are the two lines that most often double a video production budget. Agency talent in London costs from around £500 per person per shoot day; usage rights then add roughly 30% to talent, voiceover and music for UK paid social, 50% for UK broadcast, and around 100% for international all-media use, plus licence fees from £400 to £3,000 or more.
Talent surprises people twice. The first time is the day rate: four people on a two-day shoot is £4,000 before anyone has agreed what the film is for. The second time is usage. A performer's day rate buys their time on set. It does not buy the right to run their face in a paid campaign for a year.
Named talent changes the shape of the whole budget. A household name is not a day rate plus usage. It is a fee negotiated with an agent, usually five figures before anything else, and it pulls the production up a tier because the shoot now has to look like it deserves them. The calculator's top talent option starts at £20,000 for that reason and marks it with a plus, because the real figure is whatever the agent says.
The practical advice: decide where the film will run before you cast it. A film shot for organic social and then pushed into paid often has to be re-cleared with every performer in it, and some will say no.
| Choice | What it covers | What it adds | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your own people on camera | Staff, founders, customers who agree to appear. Their time, not their likeness. | £0 | A signed release from everyone on screen. Free to produce, and it still needs doing. |
| Street-cast or agency talent | A performer's day on set, directed, with wardrobe agreed in advance. | From £500 per person per shoot day | Agency commission on top. The day rate buys their time, not the right to run the film in paid media. |
| Named talent | A household name, booked through an agent, with a usage deal negotiated as part of the fee. | From £20,000, and upwards from there | Pulls the whole production up a tier. The shoot has to look like it deserves them. |
| Organic and owned channels | Your website, your social accounts, internal use, events. No paid distribution. | Included | The floor. Anything beyond this is a licence, and it is cheaper to agree it before the shoot than after. |
| UK paid social | Boosted and paid placements on Meta, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn in the UK, typically for twelve months. | About 30% on talent, voiceover and music, plus £400 in licence fees | Every performer in the film has to be cleared. One refusal means a re-edit or a reshoot. |
| UK broadcast and TV | Linear TV, VOD and cinema in the UK, with Clearcast clearance. | About 50% on talent, voiceover and music, plus £1,500 in licence fees | Clearance takes time and can change the cut. Build it into the schedule, not the week of launch. |
| International, all media | Every channel, every territory, usually twelve months and renewable. | Talent, voiceover and music roughly double, plus £3,000 or more in licence fees | Music is the quiet cost here. A track licensed for UK social can be unaffordable worldwide; a premium sync licence runs from £5,000. |
| Professional voiceover | A voice artist recorded and directed, with a basic usage licence. | From £900 | Scales with usage like talent does. A voice cleared for organic social is not cleared for broadcast. |
Figures are the published LutherMEB Productions calculator logic for 2026. Usage percentages apply to the talent, voiceover and music lines, not the whole production. Decide where the film will run before you cast it; re-clearing after the shoot is the most expensive version of every row above.
What do studios and locations cost to hire in London?
Studio and location hire in London runs from around £400 a day for a small daylight studio to £2,750 a day for a location house with its agency fee, with cyclorama studios at £475 to £950 and warehouse spaces at £85 to £280 an hour. The LutherMEB Productions calculator carries hire as a single £1,500 add-on with a wide spread because the real range is that wide.
Shooting abroad is its own line. Flights, accommodation, per diems and carnets for the kit add around £2,500 per shoot day with a wide spread, before the location itself. It is often cheaper than people expect for the light and the backdrops you get, which is why our Williams Racing campaign work has been shot in Rhodes, but it should be decided at brief stage, not discovered on the quote.
| Space | Typical rate | Per shoot day | When it is the right call |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your own premises | £0 | £0 | Corporate film, founder stories, behind the scenes. Most single-day work. |
| Small daylight or blackout studio | £45 to £60 per hour | £400 to £550 | Interviews, product on a table, talking heads. |
| Infinity cove or cyclorama studio | £475 to £950 per day | £475 to £950 | Clean backgrounds, fashion, anything where the floor has to disappear. |
| Industrial or warehouse space | £85 to £280 per hour | £850 to £2,800 | Scale and texture. Vehicles, large sets, anything that needs room to move. |
| Location house | £1,500 to £2,500 per day, plus £250 agency fee | £1,750 to £2,750 | Lifestyle and at-home campaigns. Kitchens and living rooms that look lived in. |
| Shooting abroad | Flights, hotels, per diems, carnets | From £2,500 on top of the location | Light and backdrops you cannot get in the UK. Decide at brief stage, not on the quote. |
Typical published hire prices across London studios and location agencies in 2026, excluding VAT, insurance and overtime. The calculator carries studio or location hire as a single add-on with a wide spread for this reason.
Freelancer, production company or agency: what does each cost for the same brief?
For the same London brief, a freelance videographer typically costs the least and delivers the least cover, a production company such as LutherMEB Productions sits in the middle with a crewed shoot from £3,500 a day, and an agency costs the most because it adds account management and margin on top of a production company it subcontracts. The right choice depends on how much of the thinking you want to buy.
Freelance videographer
One person, their camera, usually their edit. In London the published day rates sit anywhere between a few hundred pounds and around a thousand, before post. Right for internal comms, event coverage and content where speed matters more than finish. The cost that does not appear on the invoice is yours: you are the producer, the art director and the person who notices there is no sound recordist.
Production company
A director, a crew sized to the brief, pre-production, project management and post, quoted as one number. The LutherMEB Productions ladder is single shoot day from £3,500, campaign production £8,000 to £20,000, flagship from £25,000. Right for anything that has to look like the brand paid for it, and for any film with paid media behind it.
Agency
Strategy, creative, production and media under one roof. The production is usually subcontracted to a company like ours, with the agency's account team and margin layered on; a 20% to 40% uplift on the production cost is common, sometimes much more. Right when you need the strategy and the creative developed from scratch and have nobody in-house to do it. Wrong when you already know what the film is and simply need it made well.
The honest test is this: if you can write the one sentence about what the film has to do, you do not need an agency to write it for you, and a production company will make it for the production cost alone. If you cannot, the agency fee may be the cheapest part of the project.
Three real briefs, run through our calculator
Three briefs we quote often return these ranges in the LutherMEB Productions calculator today: a one-day founder film at £3,500 to £3,750; a two-day paid social campaign with agency talent at around £15,500 to £18,750; a three-day fashion campaign shot abroad with international usage at around £29,000 to £43,500.
Founder film, one day, your office. One shoot day, brand film, director-led crew, three cutdowns, real people on camera, organic use only. This is the floor, and it is a complete film: shot, graded, with licensed music and three platform versions.
Paid social campaign, two days, agency talent. Two shoot days, campaign with paid media, compact crew, six cutdowns, four agency talent, UK paid social usage, second camera operator. The talent and usage are a third of it.
Fashion campaign abroad, three days. Three shoot days, campaign with paid media, flagship crew, eight cutdowns, agency talent, international usage, shooting abroad, professional voiceover. The spread is wide because flights, locations and international clearance all vary; the written quote narrows it once the itinerary exists.
Run your own. The calculator is above, and the brief it produces is yours to keep.
How accurate is a cost estimate compared to a quote?
The LutherMEB Productions calculator estimate lands inside the range we would quote for the same brief about nine times in ten. A written quote is more precise because it accounts for the things a slider cannot see: location complexity, styling, the number of stakeholders approving the cut, and whether the schedule has a weekend in it. The quote is free and arrives within 48 hours.
The estimate exists so that you arrive at that conversation already knowing which tier you are in, and so that the quote is never a shock. If a cheaper tier is the right call for the brief, the quote will say so.
If a production company charges you to find out what they charge, or will not give you a range before a call, the calculator is a reasonable thing to send them.
How should you use the estimate when briefing a production company?
Send the copied brief exactly as written, ask every production company to quote against the same seven inputs, and decide usage before casting. Those three habits remove most of the gap between quotes and most of the surprises after signing.
Copy the brief and send it as written. A production company that receives "two days, compact crew, four talent, UK paid social, six cutdowns, estimate £15,500 to £18,750" can quote accurately in a day and has nothing to hide behind.
Ask every quote to match the same seven inputs. Most quotes that look cheaper are quoting fewer days, a smaller crew or no usage. Line them up against the same brief and the gap usually closes.
Treat the range as a range. The low end is the cheapest honest delivery of the brief. The high end is the same brief with every sensible contingency included.
Keep the number inside the tier. If your estimate is £8,500, you are in campaign production and should expect a compact crew and paid-media deliverables. If it is £3,600, you are buying a single excellent day, and asking for campaign scope on that day is where projects go wrong.
The Bottom Line
A London video production budget is seven decisions, and you can make five of them before you speak to anyone. Shoot days and crew size set the scale. Talent and usage decide whether the budget doubles. Deliverables are cheap at the margin. Studios, travel and voiceover are known numbers that either apply or do not.
Get it approved as a range and a tier, tied to what the film has to do. The calculator does the maths on our published rates and hands you the brief. Send that brief to us and the written quote is free within 48 hours. Send it to anyone else and you will get a straighter answer than you would have got from a discovery call.

Single commercial shoot days start at £3,500 with LutherMEB Productions, including a director-led crew, one hero film, three platform cutdowns, two revision rounds and licensed music. Campaign production with a compact crew and paid-media deliverables runs £8,000 to £20,000. Flagship production with named talent, multiple locations and broadcast delivery starts at £25,000.
-
On the invoice, usually. In London a freelancer is one person with a camera at a day rate; a production company day from LutherMEB Productions is £3,500 with a crew, pre-production and post included. The difference is who does the producing, the directing and the sound, and whether the finished film looks like the brand paid for it.

A tool that estimates the cost of a video shoot from the inputs that determine a quote: shoot days, production type, crew size, deliverables, talent, usage rights and add-ons. Ours runs on LutherMEB Productions' published rates and returns a range in thirty seconds, with a brief you can copy and send to any production company.

Present a range and a tier rather than a single figure, tie it to one sentence about what the film has to do, and have a written quote behind it. Campaign production, £15,500 to £18,750, for the spring launch asset, survives a finance conversation; £17,000 for a video does not.
-
Shoot days, because each one carries crew, kit, location and production time at once. After that, talent and usage rights, which together can be a third of a campaign budget. Post-production is a smaller share than most buyers expect when it is priced into the day rate.
-
If the people in it are your own staff and the film runs on your own channels, usually not. If you cast talent, use a voiceover artist or licence commercial music and then run the film in paid media or on broadcast, yes. Usage is scaled to media, territory and duration, and it is cheaper to agree it before the shoot than to re-clear it after.
-
No. It is an estimate built on published rates and it sits inside the real quote around nine times in ten. A written quote from LutherMEB Productions is free, lands within 48 hours, and accounts for the things a slider cannot see.
